Design Thinking is a process for creative problem solving with a human-centred core. Within the SMART Region Incubator, our goal is to assist startups and scale-ups to have the skills and knowledge to grow their businesses both domestically and internationally.

Our upcoming event with Peter Rasmussen aims to provide you information on what design thinking is, when you can use it, and how it can be used to overcome complex problems – to make sure your business is going to solve the right problems and be a success!

  • Where do you use Design Thinking
  • Characteristics of Complex Problems – are the problems we face complex or simple problems?
  • Case studies of Design Thinking – workshop group examples of great solutions
  • Asking the right questions to get to the heart of a problem
  • Role of technology in rural/regional/agriculture problems
  • Engaging with others to build solutions – establishing empathy

Peter has experienced a varied career across public and private enterprises both in Australia and internationally. In most of his business life, he has worked in international markets in one form or another through market strategy, manufacturing and supply chain management or with business development and investment focus. Peter’s market experience spans South East Asia, China and Japan, Western Europe, USA and parts of South America.

Over recent years having returned from living overseas Peter has provided consulting support in several capacities within the education sector both at University and vocational education institutions. This has been predominantly in marketing and business development but also working on strategic projects including learning space design and infrastructure planning.

Most recently, Peter joined Practical Systems, a New England based business providing solutions in small to medium, agribusiness enterprises. Peter was recently appointed CEO of Practical Systems with the aim of expanding the company’s presence and offerings in meaningful agricultural technologies.

Peter’s passion is design and its role not only in making useful and beautiful things but in business process improvement as well as in the field of social policy development.  He has undertaken study programs at Stanford University’s d.school and with IDEO in Design Thinking and customer experience design and is an active adherent of Design Thinking principles especially in capturing the ‘voice of the customer’ in business process design. Peter is currently active in applying Design Thinking to problems associated with building livestock intelligence to support on-farm operational decision making.
