“The greatest benefit to working with the UNE SMART Region Incubator has been the exposure and connections that have arisen. The pitch competitions have been invaluable as both a catalyst for clarifying our value proposition and as a means of communicating the presence of our product to key industry stakeholders”

Weighing in on the beef industry – Bill Mitchell now leads the way

Founder Bill Mitchell’s agtech company Optiweigh, is the most significant step forward in livestock weighing in over 30 years. Optiweigh was launched in 2019 and now has 80 units placed across every state in Australia.

The Optiweigh is a system that enables in-paddock weighing and remote monitoring of livestock. It allows producers to monitor animal and paddock performance, reduce the expense of mustering and yard weighing and optimise exit weights to meet market specifications.

Profitability and efficiency gains in the beef industry all revolve around animal weights, however, until now there has been no effective way to capture these weights while the animals are in the paddock.

Bringing animals to yards for weighing is time-consuming and causes animal weight loss, while walk over weighing requires animal training and dedicated infrastructure that cannot be easily relocated.

With built-in functionality and complete mobility, Optiweigh is so accurate that many customers have virtually stopped weighing in the yards and now rely on Bill’s system for decisions around nutrition and marketing.

In the coming weeks, Optiweigh will move into dedicated premises in Armidale and grow their team to 4 full-time staff plus 2-3 contractors. All steelwork and electronics are proudly manufactured in regional Australia.
